The Hypostatic Union

OPENING TEXT

Philippians 2:1-11,
1 If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, 2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose. 3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. 4 Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. 5 Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus:
6 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, 7 but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death – even death on a cross! 9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

INTRODUCTION

1. God the Son has always existed with the Father, equal in all divine attributes (all knowing, all powerful, and ever present), John 1:1,14,18.

2. The Hypostatic Union refers to the joining of the Son of God's divinity with a human nature at the incarnation, Philippians 2:6-7.

3. "Hypostasis" is the Greek word for "substance or nature," like found in Hebrews 1:3.  Thus, the "nature/substance/hypostasis" of Christ is two natures in one, fully human and fully divine.  Click here for more Scriptural evidence.

4. The incarnation took place at the conception of the virgin Mary when she became pregnant by the Holy Spirit, Matthew 1:18.

5. Clarifications
(i) God the Son was never created- He has always existed. He simply took on flesh to dwell with mankind.
(ii) Mary wasn't sinless (the immaculate conception), she was a sinner like all of mankind (Romans 3:23).  Therefore, Mary was chosen to bring forth God the Son by the power of the Holy Spirit, not by her own nature or righteousness.
(iii) The Father didn't become Jesus, the Father and Son are separate persons, yet one divine being.  The Father sent the person of the Son to become man, Daniel 7:13.
(iv) Jesus wasn't half God and half man, He was and is fully (100%) God and fully (100%) man in one person.

(v) Jesus, always being God in the flesh, experienced weakness (John 4:6), lack of knowledge (Mark 13:32), and suffered physical death (John 19:33) because of the "kenosis," not because He "stopped being God."  Therefore, God the Son willing and purposefully "self-emptied and limited" His divine privileges to be fully man and redeem lost mankind, Philippians 2:7-8.

THE HYPOSTATIC UNION

vs. 6-7, Jesus, already equal to God, didn't need to "grasp" His privileges of being God, He was willing to become a man.  Thus, Jesus made Himself nothing by setting aside His divine privileges and becoming limited as a man.

v. 8, He humbled Himself, even unto to death on the cross.  Meaning, He allowed His own creation to kill His earthly body.

vs. 9-11, Therefore, God the Father exalted Jesus and His name above everyone and every name. Every knee will bow and confess, "Jesus Christ is Lord (Yahweh, the God of all Creation)," Isaiah 45:21,23; to the glory (honor and reputation) of God the Father.

THE ATTITUDE OF CHRIST

vs. 1-2, Paul declares that if people are really "united with Christ," they should be, (i) like-minded in the church, (ii) have the same love, (iii) be in one spirit, and (iv) purpose.

vs. 3-4, No one should act out of "selfish ambition" or "vain conceit."  But rather in humility (i) consider others better than themselves and (ii) look to other's needs and interests.

v. 5, Therefore, everyone should have the same "attitude" and "mindset/thoughts" that Jesus had when He humbled Himself to live, suffer, and die as a man.

APPLICATION

1. Avoid All Bad Attitudes
(i) Gender Attitudes
(ii) Age Attitudes
(iii) Cultural Attitudes
(iv) Sinful Attitudes
2. Repent of All "Selfish Ambition" and "Vain Conceit," i.e., "Pride."

3. Have the Humble Attitude of Christ and Prefer Other's Needs and Interests Above Your Own

_____________________________________________

The Bottom Line: Look to Jesus' attitude in the Hypostatic Union and Kenosis as your example for acting with a humble attitude in life.

Revival > Four Reasons Why America Needs Jesus

This timely message was delivered on the first Sunday after the horrific school shooting in Connecticut where 28 people in total died- 20 children, 6 school workers, the shooter's Mom, and the shooter from suicide.

OPENING TEXT

Hosea 6:1-3,
1 Come, let us return to the Lord. He has torn us to pieces but he will heal us; he has injured us but he will bind up our wounds.
2 After two days he will revive us; on the third day he will restore us, that we may live in his presence.
3 Let us acknowledge the Lord; let us press on to acknowledge him. As surely as the sun rises, he will appear; he will come to us like the winter rains, like the spring rains that water the earth.

INTRODUCTION

+Israel Sinned Against God |
Hosea lived in a time when Israel, God's chosen people, were living in sin and idolatry.

+God Rejected His People | Thus, God declared through Hosea's prophecies that He was no longer Israel's God nor was He going to forgive them- but rather punish them if they didn't repent. Hosea 1:6,9 states,
6 Gomer conceived again and gave birth to a daughter. Then the Lord said to Hosea, "Call her Lo-Ruhamah, for I will no longer show love to the house of Israel, that I should at all forgive them."
9 Then the Lord said, "Call him Lo-Ammi, for you are not my people, and I am not your God."
The reason why Israel saw violence and tragedy was because God stopped protecting them.  The same is true in America today, there has always been violent people with guns for the last hundred years, but God protected us from their harmful ways.  Now in these last days he has allowed the evil of men's hearts to prosper by removing His hand of protection from our land.  Like a child refusing to stay close to the Mother who holds the umbrella and thus gets wet from the rain, so it is when a nation will not stay close to God- it will suffer harm.

+God Sent Assyria to Punish Israel | However, the people of Israel would not repent, thus, God rejected them as a nation for a season of destruction under the Assyrians in 722 BC.  Hosea 2:13,
13 I will punish her for the days she burned incense to the Baals; she decked herself with rings and jewelry, and went after her lovers, but me she forgot, declares the Lord.
+God Promised Israel Revival When They Repented | Therefore, in Chapter 6 God promised Hosea that when the people did finally repent He will forgive and revive them.

REVIVAL > FOUR REASONS WHY AMERICA NEEDS JESUS

Definition of Revival | The biblical definition from the Old Testament is when the people of God come alive to God and live out daily the commands of God.

Thus, revival is not a city wide prayer meeting, an outreach, a special set of services, all night worship, an on-fire sermon, a gimmick of any kind, or even souls getting saved- all these things come after the Church has experienced revival.

John Adam's Quote | "We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion... Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other." Second US President, 1798.

______________________________

1-SIN. America is more wicked than Noah's generation (over 50 million abortions) and more perverted than Sodom and Gomorrah (tens of millions of people hooked on pornography, having sex outside of marriage, and proudly living in sex relationships).
Genesis 6:1-3, Noah's Time
5 Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. 6 The Lord was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart. 7 The Lord said, I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, from man to animals to creeping things and to birds of the sky; for I am sorry that I have made them.
Jude 1:7, Sodom and Gomorrah,
7 In a similar way, Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion. They serve as an example of those who suffer the punishment of eternal fire.

2-LIES. Many Americans have exchanged the truth of God for a lie, i.e., "false religions," "evolutionary morality," and "secular humanism."
Romans 1:18-32,
18 The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, 19 since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. 20 For since the creation of the world Gods invisible qualities–his eternal power and divine nature–have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.
21 For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles.
24 Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. 25 They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator–who is forever praised. Amen.
26 Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. 27 In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.
28 Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done. 29 They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, 30 slanderers, God- haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; 31 they are senseless, faithless, heartless, ruthless. 32 Although they know Gods righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.

3-NO RESTRAINT. Many of America's top scientists, politiciansprofessors, entertainers, and business owners have thrown off the restraints of God's law.  Meaning, they have knowing and purposefully rejected the laws of God to do what seems right in their own eyes.
Psalm 2:1-3,
1 Why do the nations conspire and the peoples plot in vain? 2 The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers gather together against the Lord and against his Anointed One. 3 Let us break their chains, they say, and throw off their fetters.

4-JUDGEMENT. Jesus is coming back to judge the world in righteousness.  However, many people, like in the times of Noah and Sodom, people will be distracted by their day-to-day activities.
Luke 17:26-30,
26 Just as it was in the days of Noah, so also will it be in the days of the Son of Man. 27 People were eating, drinking, marrying and being given in marriage up to the day Noah entered the ark. Then the flood came and destroyed them all.
28 It was the same in the days of Lot. People were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building. 29 But the day Lot left Sodom, fire and sulfur rained down from heaven and destroyed them all.
30 It will be just like this on the day the Son of Man is revealed.

CONCLUSION

(1) Get saved, and (2) Stay revived to warn others- When Peter and the early church was revived they could awaken the world around them!
Acts 2:36-41,
36 Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ. 37 When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, Brothers, what shall we do?
38 Peter replied, Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off –for all whom the Lord our God will call.
40 With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, Save yourselves from this corrupt generation. 41 Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.

Thoughts About the Connecticut School Shooting

Here are My Two Thoughts Concerning this Massive Tragedy

1-CHRISTIANS | As my wife is weeping for the slain, our prayers need to rise for these families and community!  Jesus is near to the broken hearted, He bore their sorrows on the cross, and comforts all who call out to Him, Psalm 145:18-19.  Click here for comforting verses for times of grief.

2-NON CHRISTIANS | This nation is full of vile wickedness, gross perversion, and horrific violence because it has rejected God, period. Repent of your sins before a holy God and "save yourself from this wicked generation!"

Four Things to Consider from the Scriptures at This Time

1-TODAY'S MODERN WORLD IS WICKED | If God does not judge today's world, He will have to repent to Noah's generation for they were not even as voilent as modern man.  National genocides in Africa/Germany/Russia (tens of millions murdered), abortions (over 50 million just in the US), and communist & Islamic fascism (China, North Korea, Sudan, Iran, Egypt, etc).
Genesis 6:5-6,
5 The Lord saw how great mans wickedness on the earth had become, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time.
6 The Lord was grieved that he had made man on the earth, and his heart was filled with pain.
7 So the Lord said, I will wipe mankind, whom I have created, from the face of the earth –men and animals, and creatures that move along the ground, and birds of the air–for I am grieved that I have made them.

2-JESUS WILL JUDGE THE WORLD | Jesus said just how it was in Noah's day (voilent & wicked) and how it was in Sodom's day (proud & perverted)- it will be in the last days!  Therefore, everyone must prepare for Jesus' second coming!

3-THE LAST DAYS WILL BE WORSE THAN ANY PREVIOUS TIME | Paul said in the last days we would see the worst moral behavior ever witnessed upon our planet.  Americans have always had guns, schools, and angry people- but the reason why we've never seen anything like what we're seeing now is because of a dramatic increase in man's wickedness.
1 Timothy 3:1-4,
1 But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. 2 People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self- control, brutal, not lovers of the good, 4 treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God– 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with them.

4-THE GOSPEL IS OUR ONLY HOPE | The Gospel of Jesus Christ is for everyone today, repent of your sins and be saved!  Everyone must admit they are a sinner, believe in Jesus as the Savior who rose from the dead, and confess their sins and Jesus as the Lord of their lives.

Acts 2:36-40,
36 Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.

God's Got Your Back!

SERMON

NOTES

Text: James 1:5-8, God promises to give wisdom to all who ask.  Therefore, let us look at the questions below and ask God's Word for the answers!

Most Asked Questions:

1. What can we do to see national revival?

Preach, pray, and plug away, Acts 2:42-47.  National revival will happen when personal revival happens and the church is shining its light the brightest.

Resource: Great preaching on revival, here.

2. Why does the devil have so much power and seem to be bringing more evil upon the earth than God does good?

The devil only has as much authority as what people give him and Jesus said, "wide is the path of destruction," therefore, many people freely choose sin over God's righteousness, Matthew 7:13.

Resource: Insightful answer by a Christian philosopher, here.

3. How does the Bible define manhood?

Being a biblical man is being the most like God the Father and His Son Jesus, both are seen in the Old and New Testament as the best examples of masculinity.  The most important traits would be, (1) Love for God and people as defined by the Bible, (2) commitment to family, (3) hard working and providing, (4) teaching and leading both in the church and community, and (5) a person of compassion and charitable deeds, 1 Timothy 3:1-13.

Resource: Tons of sermons on Biblical manhood and woman hood, here.

4. How do I raise godly children?

Lead by example and teach them the ways of God, Proverbs 22:6.  Teach them to pray, memorize Scripture, discipline them consistently, discover their passions, connect them to the church, and speak the Word of God over their lives as much as possible.

Resource: Best website out there on how to have a godly family, here.

5. How can a single parent do the job of both parents and raise their children without lacking any good thing?

By depending on God's strength, extended family, and the church.  Find same-sex mentors for the child as early as possible (if you as the parent are not the same gender) and have them meet together weekly or monthly, Titus 2:1-6.

Also, have them safely learn about the positives of the missing parent through trusted relationships.  For example, if you're a single Mom raising a daughter and her dad is not in the picture, have her under your supervision in public, start a trusted relationship with a father and his family in the church.  Consider joint gatherings, like "family fun nights," than your daughter can see the value of a father and learn what to look for in her husband one day.  Ofcouse family members would be best for the job, but if they don't have godly principles, I would value the church family more highly.

Resource: Many encouraging articles on the aspects of single parenting- divorce, custody, parenting advice, etc; here.

6. How do we blend two families together to make a one new happy family?

By the same biblical principles for a marriage between two singles without children.  Both parents should have a good relationship with God and the church, the man should be the leader and final authority, and together the husband and wife must raise their children with the teachings of the Bible, Ephesians 5:22-33.

Resource: Great website and article for blended families, here.

7. How do I increase my faith?

By hearing, reading, and speaking the Word of God, Romans 10:17.

Resource: Great faith based preaching on various topics, here.

8. How can I really forgive those who have deeply hurt me?

Only by God's grace.  You must see them as sinners in need of Savior, just like how you were, and believe that God loves them enough to not let them parish, 2 Peter 3:9.  Also, remember how God forgave you when you didn't deserve it and thus, see that He wants you to do the same thingto them though they don't deserve it, Matthew 18:21-35.

Resource: Great book on overcoming bitterness and unforgiveness, here.

9. Are we really living in the end times, if so what are Christians to do about it?

Yes, don't give in to sin or let fear take away your faith in Jesus.  Live fully for Jesus by obeying all He commanded and tell the world about His Gospel, Matthew 24:12-14.

Resource: Powerful endtime preaching series, here.

10. How can Christians fight in war and kill people, when Jesus said to "turn the other check?"

Its called a "just war," meaning it is better to fight than not fight.  For example, if everyone turned the other check to Hilter there would be no more checks left!  Sometimes fighting and killing people in war is the only way innocent people can be spared, Romans 13:3-5.

Resource: Insightful book on the different views of war from Christian perspectives, here.

11. Where was Jesus before His birth?

In heaven as God the Son, Jesus has always existed, His birth was simply Him taking on flesh, John 1:1-18.

Resource: Article on the "incarnation," here.

12. Why doesn't God heal everyone?

Three options, (1) Its not His will to heal at that time, 2 Timothy 2:14, (2) Lack of faith, Matthew 17:19-20; or (3) A combination of 1 & 2.  Meaning, God can be desiring to heal but we are lacking faith and sometimes, sickness leads to death because all men are destined to die.

Resource: Further study on divine healing, here.

13. How do I keep hope in these tough economic times?

Trust God, don't base your personal value on your valuables, be open to realigning yourself and finding a new job in a different field.  Also, be willing to get retrained and educated (Joseph in the Bible), pray for new open doors to open, (Psalm 1), and don't give up hope, Matthew 6:33.

Resource: Informative website for Christians to learn Biblical financial principles, here.

14. What is the balance between ministry and family, which should comes first?

Family always comes first in the sense of responsibility and care when you are married or have children, 1 Timothy 5:8.  However, in the sense of serving God and following His commands, God's ministry comes first, Luke 14:26.  Therefore, if your spouse is saved and willing to serve God, you must work together to meet each other's needs first.  Then seek to serve God in the ministry with your lives as the examples of disciples.

Resource: Great book on having a blessed life and ministry, here.

15. Why are same sex attractions wrong if they come natural to the person?

Everyone is a born a sinner with all kinds of wrong desires, our sexual desires must be subjected to the Word of God just like jealousy, greed, etc.  Therefore, seek God daily to renew your mind, Romans 12:1-2.

Resource: Powerful website for resources and encouragement, here.

16. What is the Biblical stance on illegal immigration?

I believe we as Christians should not violate the law unless it violates our faith, all other laws should be obeyed.  In the case of immigration, until the laws are changed, illegal immigrants should do all they can to become legal citizens, Romans 13:1.  Also, the difference between America and Israel's care of "strangers," was Israel made it a law to help in such a way.  Thus, the bottom line is people should follow the laws of the country they live in.

Resource: Great article with more depth and different points of view, here.

17. How can I overcome depression?

There are basically two kinds of depression in my point of view, one that is physical and the other emotionally.  Meaning, the physical kind can be seen and diagnosed by doctors and given medicine to help, for example increasing levels of "serotonin."  However, sometimes people are just going through a hard time emotionally and need to make some new friends, find a different job, or spend more time in church, etc.

Therefore, those who suffer from chronic depression should seek a doctor along with prayer for healing and those suffering emotionally should turn their attention to God and praise Him through the storm, Nehemiah 8:9-10.

Resource: Series of articles on depression in the Christian's life, here.

18. How should I respond to unbiblical leadership in the church, especially when they sin and cover it up?

We as Christians should never support sin in the name of love.  Thus, when leaders sin they are to be rebuked before the whole congregation so that others will take warning and fear God- no cover up of any kind.  Unless that takes place, with genuine repentance, Christians are free from any and all ties to the church and its leadership, 1 Timothy 5:19-22.

Resource: Great book on dealing with sinning/controlling/unbiblical leadership, here.

19. What if someone I love is missing, how do I have closer or live in peace?

Jacob was told his son Joseph was dead, yet it turned out he was still alive.  Thus, we can learn from Jacob to continue to live life pleasing God and trust Him no matter what happens in the situation.  God is big enough to make all things will work together for His good either in this life or the one to come, Romans 8:28.

Resource: Powerful book dealing with grief, here.

20. How can I show strangers the love of Christ without appearing overbearing or be classified as poor myself?

I like what John Wesley said, "We are to do all the good we can, to whoever we can, whenever we can, for as long as we can," Galatians 6:10.  Do good in ways people can appreciate it and don't let what people think about you stop you from being a servant- for that's what Jesus did!

Resource: Great website with tons of stories and practical ways to do community outreach, here.

Conclusion:

1-God's got your back, Psalm 145:17-20.

2-Remember no matter what you're facing God's Word has the answer, 2 Timothy 3:16-17.

3-Nothing can separate you from the love of God, Romans 8:35-39.

Biblical Example of God's Righteousness and Love: The day of judgment when Jesus divides the world like sheep and goats.  He will eternal save and reward those who names are written in the book of life and eternally condemn and punish those who rejected him, Matthew 25:31-46 & Revelation 20:11-22:1.

My Personal Example of God's Righteousness and Love: The time God was my friend even when others hurt me.  He never left me and always poured out His love in righteousness, i.e., "He did the right things."

Why I Don't Celebrate Christmas, but I Like the Christmas Season

My Story

I grew up pretty much like everyone else in America concerning Christmas.  My parents gave me gifts, we visited family, and I enjoyed the festivities.  However, after giving my life to Jesus and attending Bible college in New Orleans I began to learn about the "origins" of the Holiday and soon found myself not only rejecting it but standing in total opposition to all those who did.  I went even as far as calling Christmas a "sin" and debated a pastor on whether or not Christians should celebrate it.

After 4-5 years living and acting as the "Christian Ebenezer Scrooge" I took a different stance, which I still maintain to this day which is, "I don't celebrate Christmas, but I like the Christmas season."  This blog will basically explain why I don't celebrate it and how I find good in the season.

Five Reasons I Don't Personally Celebrate Christmas

1. Pagan Customs | Most people don't realize it, but celebrating Jesus' birth was never a command given by Jesus or anyone else in the Bible.  Jesus wasn't even born in the winter or on December 25th.  As a result, the main traditions and customs of Christmas are rooted in ancient paganism.

Here is a list of some of the pagan influences found in Christmas celebrations:

(a) The Christmas Tree & Decorations: The Encyclopedia Britannica states, "The use of evergreen trees, wreaths, and garlands to symbolize eternal life was a custom of the ancient Egyptians, Chinese, and Hebrews. Tree worship was common among the pagan Europeans and survived their conversion to Christianity in the Scandinavian customs of decorating the house and barn with evergreens at the New Year to scare away the devil and of setting up a tree for the birds during Christmastime."

(b) Gift Giving and the Date: The Zondervan Pictorial Encyclopedia states, "The Feast of Saturnalia in early Rome... was celebrated for 7 days from the 17th to the 24th of December and was marked by a spirit of merriment, gift giving to children and other forms of entertainment."

2. Greed | In my personal opinion Christmas gift giving has gotten totally out of control in the American culture and for the most part it just makes me sick.  I generally see both rich and poor alike massively over spend, go deep in debt with their credit cards, children pressure their parents for non-essentials, and it seems like the majority of people have an "attitude of ingratitude" to the point I believe the only word to describe it is, "greed."

Ofcourse, I know not everyone's Christmas celebration is "full of greed," however, I simply choose to withdraw myself from the whole ordeal entirely to avoid all forms of personal and cultural greed.  Paul stated in 1 Timothy 6:8 a very much needed truth that I hold to in regards to gift-giving, "But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that." Therefore, I avoid any and all pressure to give and receive gifts during the Christmas season.

3. False Roman Catholic Teachings | One might ask, "If celebrating Jesus' birth is not commanded in the Bible, how did it become a Christian holy day with so many pagan customs?"  The simple answer is, "The Roman Catholic Church created Christ-mas by mixing together the pagan customs of Europe with Christianity."  Hence, the name "Christ Mass."

Therefore, I as a Bible believing Christian reject the Roman Catholic "mass" and all the things associated with it.  Including, the false Roman doctrine of transubstantiation in the communion (to believe one is eating and drinking the literal body and blood of Jesus), the role of priests in confession of sin, the Pope and his supposed authority, and the worship of saints, i.e, "Saint Nick."

4. Church History | Not only was Christmas non-existent to the first disciples, but when the Reformers in the 1500's protested against the Roman Catholic Church they totally rejected Christmas along with all its "trappings of popery."

The early Puritans in America were so against the customs of the Roman Catholic Church that they actually made it illegal in Boston to celebrate Christmas!  Why?  Because they knew it was from Rome's pagan mixture and they rejected it based on Scripture, Jeremiah 10:2-4.

I believe the great Baptist preacher of the 1800's Charles Spurgeon represented the Reformer's position best, as well as my own, when he said the following concerning Christians celebrating Christmas,
"We have no superstitious regard for times and seasons. Certainly we do not believe in the present ecclesiastical arrangement called Christmas. First, because we do not believe in the mass at all, but abhor it, whether it be sung in Latin or in English; and secondly, because we find no Scriptural warrant whatever for observing any day as the birthday of the Savior; and consequently, its observance is a superstition, because not of divine authority."
5. Its a Distraction | Obviously, not as important as the other points, however, I still believe its a valid reason because I dislike things that take time and money away from that which is most important.  Instead of being focused on giving to the church, helping the poor, and raising godly families people get distracted by the rush of Christmas shopping and spend hardly any time with Jesus and understanding why He actually came to this earth, i.e., "to die for our sins and to give us a new life."  Thus, I choose to remain focused on God and family and not be consumed with America's mass consumerism, Ephesians 5:16.

Four Reasons I Like the Christmas Season

1. Family Time | I really enjoy the time off that is given in our culture for people to be together and share life as a family.

2. Charitable Giving | Non-for-profits do their best fundraising during the Christmas season because many people have a sense to give to others.

3. Opportunities to Talk About Jesus | "Jesus is the reason for the season" works for me.  Despite the pagan influences, its pretty easy to overlook those things and just talk about Jesus with people while giving them free cookies and hot chocolate around the church!

4. Foreign Missions Benefit: In many countries Christmas is the most liberating day for Christ followers, even Muslim countries give more freedom for Christians to express themselves.  Thus, I love to help missionaries make the most of the season by feeding the poor, giving help to the needy, and spreading the Gospel of Jesus.

My Advice to "Non-Christmas Celebrators"

1. Don't Judge Those Who Do | Paul is very clear in Colossians 2:16 & Romans 14:5 that we're not to judge another Christian according to "holy days" or "holidays."  As long as the Christian is not worshipping the tree, its fine.

2. Don't Make it an Issue | I believe unity and peace in the church is more important than arguing over Christmas.  As a pastor I've learned in the past how focusing too much on Christmas needlessly hurt people in the church who I forced to take on my personal conviction.  Therefore, I would suggest if someone asks you about Christmas graciously share with them your beliefs and then leave it alone.  If God wants the teaching to go further in their lives He is able to share it with them without you "ramming it down their spiritual throats."  Remember, by you not being able to celebrate, like myself, according to Romans 14 you and I are the "weaker in faith" and not the "stronger."

3. Relax and Have Fun | If I can do it- I know you can too!  I have found joy in Christmas caroling because it allows me to sings hymns on people's door steps and share the love of Christ.  People in the community are more talkative, families get together, good food is everywhere, therefore, "rejoice with those who rejoice!"

My Advice to "Christmas Celebrators"

1. Don't Judge Those Who Don't | Paul is very clear in Colossians 2:16 & Romans 14:5 that we're not to judge another Christian according to "holy days" or "holidays."  As long as the non-celebrator isn't trying to burn your Christmas tree on the altar, their fine.

2. Don't Make it an Issue | I believe unity and peace in the church is more important than arguing over Christmas.  As a pastor I've learned in the past how focusing too much on anything other than Jesus and the Bible can be a waste of time.  Simply, share why you celebrate and leave it alone.  No need to try to force your beliefs on those who don't.  Think of it this way, you save money not having to buy us gifts!  Also, according to Romans 14 you are the "stronger in faith" and thus shouldn't grieve the Christian who cannot celebrate because they are "weaker in faith."

3. Don't Over Spend | Enjoy the season, do all unto God, but just don't go into debt.  Take the pressure off of yourself and do whatever you feel is best for you and your family.  If your kids have food, clothes, and a place to stay consider giving them just one Christmas card and write in it, "Merry Christmas!  Your gift for the next year is clothes, food, and shelter!"

Most Common Questions I Get For Not Personally Celebrating Christmas

1. What About Your Kids? My kids have an ipad, iphone, clothes and toys coming out of every closet, and parents who love to surprise them year round with gifts- not mention two sets of grandparents who make almost every visit a national holiday!  I think they'll be fine, see Matthew 6:33 for my parenting priorities.

2. Do You Celebrate Birthdays?  If Yes, Why, Aren't They Pagan in Origin Too? Yes to both.  We celebrate birthdays and yes they are pagan in origins, meaning the celebration is not found in the Bible.  However, because it doesn't involve religion and its tailored to each person differently we as a family can control greed, expel wrong thinking, and have a good time.

3. How Long Do You Think You Will Continue to Not Celebrate? Short answer, "Until my conscience is no longer grieved."  Long answer, according to Romans 14 I see myself as the "weaker brother" and thus don't have a clear conscience to separate the "good" from the "bad."  Meaning, I cannot in good conscience see past the vast negatives and enjoy the positives. Thus, I to be at peace I avoid it altogether.  On the other hand, one day if I can be at peace in my conscience as other Christians are who celebrate Christmas without greed and the like- I will do so.  Until then I will refrain.

4. How Does Your Wife and Kids Feel About Not Having Christmas? My wife and I discussed this before we got married and she agreed to my standard for our kids.  At the same time, I felt comfortable enough to give her freedom without judgment to participate with others if she so desired, but after many years she has seen the peace of avoiding it altogether as well.  My children are all under 4 years old, thus, I haven't had to discuss it yet, but I'm sure it wont be much different than our other family guidelines like, "going to church every Sunday," "not watching dirty movies," etc.

The History of Thanksgiving in the United States

Brief History of Thanksgiving in the United States

(From Wikipedia, full article here)

In the United States, the modern Thanksgiving holiday tradition is commonly, but not universally, traced to a poorly documented 1621 celebration at Plymouth in present-day Massachusetts. The 1621 Plymouth feast and thanksgiving was prompted by a good harvest.

In later years, religious thanksgiving services were declared by civil leaders such as Governor Bradford who planned a thanksgiving celebration and fast in 1623. The practice of holding an annual harvest festival like this did not become a regular affair in New England until the late 1660s.

Pilgrims and Puritans who began emigrating from England in the 1620s and 1630s carried the tradition of Days of Fasting and Days of Thanksgiving with them to New England. Several days of Thanksgiving were held in early New England history that have been identified as the "First Thanksgiving", including Pilgrim holidays in Plymouth in 1621 and 1623, and a Puritan holiday in Boston in 1631.

Thanksgiving proclamations were made mostly by church leaders in New England up until 1682, and then by both state and church leaders until after the American Revolution. During the revolutionary period, political influences affected the issuance of Thanksgiving proclamations. Various proclamations were made by royal governors, John Hancock, General George Washington, and the Continental Congress, each giving thanks to God for events favorable to their causes.

As President of the United States, George Washington proclaimed the first nation-wide thanksgiving celebration in America marking November 26, 1789, "as a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favours of Almighty God".

(I added highlights to show key concepts)

Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor; and Whereas both Houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me to "recommend to the people of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness:"

Now, therefore, I do recommend and assign Thursday, the 26th day of November next, to be devoted by the people of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being who is the beneficent author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be; that we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of the people of this country previous to their becoming a nation; for the signal and manifold mercies and the favorable interpositions of His providence in the course and conclusion of the late war; for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty which we have since enjoyed; for the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enable to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national one now lately instituted for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed, and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and, in general, for all the great and various favors which He has been pleased to confer upon us.

And also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech Him to pardon our national and other transgressions; to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually; to render our National Government a blessing to all the people by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed; to protect and guide all sovereigns and nations (especially such as have shown kindness to us), and to bless them with good governments, peace, and concord; to promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and us; and, generally to grant unto all mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as He alone knows to be best.
Given under my hand, at the city of New York, the 3d day of October, A.D. 1789.

Abraham Lincoln's Thanksgiving Proclamation | 1863

(I added highlights to show key concepts)

The year that is drawing towards its close, has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature, that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever watchful providence of Almighty God.

In the midst of a civil war of unequaled magnitude and severity, which has sometimes seemed to foreign States to invite and to provoke their aggression, peace has been preserved with all nations, order has been maintained, the laws have been respected and obeyed, and harmony has prevailed everywhere except in the theatre of military conflict; while that theatre has been greatly contracted by the advancing armies and navies of the Union.

Needful diversions of wealth and of strength from the fields of peaceful industry to the national defence, have not arrested the plough, the shuttle or the ship; the axe has enlarged the borders of our settlements, and the mines, as well of iron and coal as of the precious metals, have yielded even more abundantly than heretofore. Population has steadily increased, notwithstanding the waste that has been made in the camp, the siege and the battle-field; and the country, rejoicing in the consiousness of augmented strength and vigor, is permitted to expect continuance of years with large increase of freedom.

No human counsel hath devised nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God, who, while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy. It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and one voice by the whole American People.

I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens. And I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings, they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to His tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquillity and Union.

In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the United States to be affixed.
Done at the City of Washington, this Third day of October, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-three, and of the Independence of the Unites States the Eighty-eighth.  By the President: Abraham Lincoln.

What Christians Can Learn from the History of Thanksgiving

1. GIVE THANKS TO GOD | Take time out to thank God for all He has done in your life, Psalm 107.

2. REPENT OF SIN | Repent of any sins you have committed against God, for rebellion against God is the ultimate from of ingratitude, 2 Chronicles 7:14.

3. INSTRUCT OTHERS | Teach your fellow US citizens, by both deed and example, like George Washington did to "perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually," 2 Timothy 4:1-2.

4. GIVE TO COMMUNITY | Show your THANKS by GIVING to others, do community outreach, James 1:27.

5. EAT & BE MERRY | Enjoy a great meal with friends and family, 1 Corinthians 10:31!

Faith and Works

Text: James 2:14-26

Introduction

1. The Foundation of Salvation | Mankind is saved by faith alone in Jesus Christ.  Faith in Jesus + Nothing = Salvation, Romans 5:1-2.

2. The Proper Role of Good Works | Those who are truly saved will keep God's commands and have a life of good works.  Faith in Jesus + Obedience = Good Works, Ephesians 2:8-10.

3. Some Common Errors:

(a) Works Salvation:  Salvation is half faith and half good works, Faith in Christ + Good Works = Salvation.

(b) Sinning Saints: Good works are not necessary in the Christian life, Faith in Christ - Good Works = Salvation, Hebrews 10:26.

4. The Necessity of Good Works | Good works are not necessary to be saved, but are necessary to display one's salvation and prove one's faith genuine.

5. Key Statement | Faith without works is dead, James 2:17.

Breakdown of the Passage

v. 14, James challenges the false belief that Christians can live a Christian life without following Christ commands, John 14:15 & 1 John 2:4-6.

vs. 15-16, James gives the example of trying to help a brother or sister in need and only giving them "well wishes" is a shallow confession without action and is worthless.

v. 17, The most important statement in the text is given, "faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action is dead;" thus proving that faith must have action to be considered valid and genuine.

v. 18, Faith and deeds are placed against each other in the mind of the skeptic who believes faith without deeds is still valid.  Thus, James points out to the skeptic the only way to validate faith is by action and deeds.  Example:  How would one validate the claim made by someone, "I am a professional basketball player?"  By the deeds of the person in a basketball game.

v. 19, James makes the point clear by stating that demons believe in God but are not saved.  Thus, shallow affirmation does not justify someone, but obedience in the confession is needed.  Example:  To profess, "I'm in the Army," can only be really true if the one who confesses it obeys the rules of the Army.

v. 20, James again rebukes the shallow confessor as being "foolish," because they don't obey God's commands and demonstrate their faith.

vs. 21-23, James then gives the example of Abraham having faith and how he acted in obedience by being willing to sacrifice his son.  Thus, Abraham's faith was validated by his obedience to God's commands.

v. 24, James declares that a person, "is justified by what he does and not by faith alone."  This statement is not meant to contradict Paul in Romans 5, but rather clarify that true faith has validating action in obeying God's commands.

v. 25, James gives another example of Rehab, showing that her faith was demonstrated by acting in obedience to God by hiding the spies for their safety.

v. 26, The section ends with the conclusion, "faith without deeds is dead."  Therefore, the statement made in verse 17 is proven true by the two examples and is left for the reader to accept as God's Word.

Therefore, the following is true from James,
1. The Foundation of Salvation: Mankind is saved by faith alone in Jesus Christ.  Faith in Jesus + Nothing = Salvation.
2. The Proper Role of Good Works: Those who are truly saved will keep God's commands and have a life of good works.  Faith in Jesus + Obedience = Good Works.

Application

1. Have faith in Jesus for salvation, Romans 5:1-2.

2. Have faith in Jesus to obey His commands (i.e., "good works"), Ephesians 2:8-10.

Can Women Be in the Ministry? Pastors? Elders? Deacons?

Simple answer, Yes to all.  I have debated this issue with Matt Slick from www.carm.org and still stand by my deductive reasoning.

Please note the basic premises and conclusion:

1. Women have the same salvation as men according to Galatians 3:28.
2. Women have the same Holy Spirit baptism as men according to Acts 2:18.
3. Women have the same spiritual gifts as men according to 1 Corinthians 12:28.
4. Therefore, women must have the same offices as men according to Romans 16:1,7.

_____________

Please note the premises, explanations, and conclusion:

1. Women have the same salvation as men according to Galatians 3:28.

(a) The verse states, "There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus."

(b) Thus, it is clear that women have the same salvation as men- there is no argument here from the opposing view.

2. Women have the same Holy Spirit baptism as men according to Acts 2:18.

(a) The verse states, "Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy."

(b) Thus, it is clear that women have the same Spirit baptism and the same gift to "prophesy."  There is no opposing view to this premise.

3. Women have the same spiritual gifts as men according to 1 Corinthians 12:28.

(a) The verse states, "And in the church God has appointed first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then workers of miracles, also those having gifts of healing, those able to help others, those with gifts of administration, and those speaking in different kinds of tongues."

(b) It is clear that the common gift for women in the church (secretaries/administrators) is given without gender restriction along with "apostles," "prophets," and "teachers."

(c) Thus, with both Acts 2:18b (they shall prophesy) and 1 Cor. 12:28, it is clear there is no gender distinction in spiritual gifts.  Matt Slick offered no argument here, not sure how other opposing views regard this premise.

4. Therefore, women must have the same offices as men according to Romans 16:1,7.
(a) The verse states, v. 1 "I commend to you our sister Phoebe, a servant of the church in Cenchrea..." & v. 7, "Greet Andronicus and Junias, my relatives who have been in prison with me. They are outstanding among the apostles, and they were in Christ before I was."

(b) This is the debated issue.  However, if the above premises are correct, which in my debate with Matt Slick they were agreed upon, then the conclusion is true regardless of how one feels about it.

(c) The main issues brought by the opposing side come from the gender restrictions found elsewhere in the Bible, mainly 1 Timothy 2:11-12 & 1 Corinthians 14:34-35.

(d) However, in these restrictions the opposing side is not consistent, for other issues are brought up as well that are not taken "literal" in most opposing side churches, (i) no braided hair- 1 Tim. 2:9, (ii) not to allow women to talk at all in church- 1 Tim. 2:11, and (iii) women are saved specifically by the good work of childbearing, 1 Tim. 2:15.

(e) Therefore, both sides have to draw practical applications and conclusions within the biblical culture and other passages to justify and comply with the very awkward commands of Paul to Timothy and the Corinthians to the modern woman.  We, who believe in the equality of women in the ministry, simply state that the above restrictions are stated within culture to a specific people and time.  Plus, if it can be shown that women in other places at different times did talk and lead men, then the conclusion is once again validated.

(d) In conclusion, Douglas Moo in his commentary on Romans conceded that Phoebe according to the Greek and the context is most assuredly a deacon (Moo, "Encountering Romans," p. 209).  And, Eldon Epp in his book, "Junia the First Women Apostle," sites that both he and the renowned scholar Richard Bauckham prove vigorously that Junia was an apostle and Daniel Wallace and other dissenters have "serious defects" in their methodology to prove otherwise (Epp, "Junia the First Women Apostle," Kindle 953).

The Fire of God!

Text: Matthew 3:11-12

1. The Fire of God Has Two Different Purposes

(i) To baptize and empower the disciple, Matt. 3:11.

(ii) To judge the world, Matt. 3:12.

2. Old Testament Examples

(i) God spoke to Moses through the fire, i.e., "the burning bush," Ex. 3:2.

(ii) God led the people of Israel through the desert by a "pillar of fire," Ex. 13:22.

(iii) God came down onto Mt. Sinai (Ex. 19:18) and spoke to the people through the fire, Deut. 4:12.

(iv) Daily offerings and sacrifices were made to God by the priests with fire, Lev. 7:5.

(v) God answered by fire in Elijah's time to show the people He was the true God, 1 Kings 18:25.

(vi) God's presence came in fire at the dedication of the temple in Solomon's time, 2 Chron. 7:1.

(vii) God declared to Jeremiah that His Words are like "fire" compared to the words of "dross" from the false prophets, Jer. 23:29.

(viii) Daniel had a vision of God's throne and saw fire all around Him with a river of fire flowing from Him, Dan. 7:9-10.

3. New Testament Examples

(i) Jesus said everyone would be "salted with fire," Mark 9:49.

(ii) Jesus said He didn't come to bring peace, but rather He came to bring "fire on the earth," Luke 12:49-52.

(iii) The fire of God is seen on the disciples heads when the Holy Spirit is poured out on Pentecost, Acts 2:3.

(iv) Jesus is described as having eyes of fire and having seven lamp stands and seven stars in His right hand, Rev. 1:20.

(v) John sees a vision of heaven like Daniel and there is a sea of glass and fire coming from the Throne of God, Rev. 15:2.

4. Application for Today

(i) God is a consuming fire (Heb. 12:29 from Deut. 4:24), thus, you are going to be consumed by God's fire no matter what, Mark 9:49.

(ii) You will either be burned by God's fire in punishment and torment (Rev. 20:14-15) or set on fire by His Holy Spirit with passion and holiness, Matt. 3:11.

(iii)  Therefore, ask God to baptize you with His Holy Spirit fire today and be filled with power to live for God 100%, Acts 1:8; 2:1-3.

Extras

1. Great worship song from William Booth, founder of the Salvation Army, about the fire of God in the late 1800's, "Send the Fire."  Lindell Cooley remade it in the 1990's during the Brownsville Revival.  The lyrics are included, enjoy!

2. Powerful illustration of God's presence in the pillar of fire during the time of Moses in the desert.
