Why I Don't Celebrate Christmas, but I Like the Christmas Season


My Story

I grew up pretty much like everyone else in America concerning Christmas.  My parents gave me gifts, we visited family, and I enjoyed the festivities.  However, after giving my life to Jesus and attending Bible college in New Orleans I began to learn about the "origins" of the Holiday and soon found myself not only rejecting it but standing in total opposition to all those who did.  I went even as far as calling Christmas a "sin" and debated a pastor on whether or not Christians should celebrate it.

After 4-5 years living and acting as the "Christian Ebenezer Scrooge" I took a different stance, which I still maintain to this day which is, "I don't celebrate Christmas, but I like the Christmas season."  This blog will basically explain why I don't celebrate it and how I find good in the season.


Five Reasons I Don't Personally Celebrate Christmas

1. Pagan Customs | Most people don't realize it, but celebrating Jesus' birth was never a command given by Jesus or anyone else in the Bible.  Jesus wasn't even born in the winter or on December 25th.  As a result, the main traditions and customs of Christmas are rooted in ancient paganism.

Here is a list of some of the pagan influences found in Christmas celebrations:

(a) The Christmas Tree & Decorations: The Encyclopedia Britannica states, "The use of evergreen trees, wreaths, and garlands to symbolize eternal life was a custom of the ancient Egyptians, Chinese, and Hebrews. Tree worship was common among the pagan Europeans and survived their conversion to Christianity in the Scandinavian customs of decorating the house and barn with evergreens at the New Year to scare away the devil and of setting up a tree for the birds during Christmastime."

(b) Gift Giving and the Date: The Zondervan Pictorial Encyclopedia states, "The Feast of Saturnalia in early Rome... was celebrated for 7 days from the 17th to the 24th of December and was marked by a spirit of merriment, gift giving to children and other forms of entertainment."
  
2. Greed | In my personal opinion Christmas gift giving has gotten totally out of control in the American culture and for the most part it just makes me sick.  I generally see both rich and poor alike massively over spend, go deep in debt with their credit cards, children pressure their parents for non-essentials, and it seems like the majority of people have an "attitude of ingratitude" to the point I believe the only word to describe it is, "greed."

Ofcourse, I know not everyone's Christmas celebration is "full of greed," however, I simply choose to withdraw myself from the whole ordeal entirely to avoid all forms of personal and cultural greed.  Paul stated in 1 Timothy 6:8 a very much needed truth that I hold to in regards to gift-giving, "But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that." Therefore, I avoid any and all pressure to give and receive gifts during the Christmas season.  

3. False Roman Catholic Teachings | One might ask, "If celebrating Jesus' birth is not commanded in the Bible, how did it become a Christian holy day with so many pagan customs?"  The simple answer is, "The Roman Catholic Church created Christ-mas by mixing together the pagan customs of Europe with Christianity."  Hence, the name "Christ Mass." 

Therefore, I as a Bible believing Christian reject the Roman Catholic "mass" and all the things associated with it.  Including, the false Roman doctrine of transubstantiation in the communion (to believe one is eating and drinking the literal body and blood of Jesus), the role of priests in confession of sin, the Pope and his supposed authority, and the worship of saints, i.e, "Saint Nick."

4. Church History | Not only was Christmas non-existent to the first disciples, but when the Reformers in the 1500's protested against the Roman Catholic Church they totally rejected Christmas along with all its "trappings of popery."

The early Puritans in America were so against the customs of the Roman Catholic Church that they actually made it illegal in Boston to celebrate Christmas!  Why?  Because they knew it was from Rome's pagan mixture and they rejected it based on Scripture, Jeremiah 10:2-4.

I believe the great Baptist preacher of the 1800's Charles Spurgeon represented the Reformer's position best, as well as my own, when he said the following concerning Christians celebrating Christmas,
"We have no superstitious regard for times and seasons. Certainly we do not believe in the present ecclesiastical arrangement called Christmas. First, because we do not believe in the mass at all, but abhor it, whether it be sung in Latin or in English; and secondly, because we find no Scriptural warrant whatever for observing any day as the birthday of the Savior; and consequently, its observance is a superstition, because not of divine authority."
5. Its a Distraction | Obviously, not as important as the other points, however, I still believe its a valid reason because I dislike things that take time and money away from that which is most important.  Instead of being focused on giving to the church, helping the poor, and raising godly families people get distracted by the rush of Christmas shopping and spend hardly any time with Jesus and understanding why He actually came to this earth, i.e., "to die for our sins and to give us a new life."  Thus, I choose to remain focused on God and family and not be consumed with America's mass consumerism, Ephesians 5:16.

Four Reasons I Like the Christmas Season

1. Family Time | I really enjoy the time off that is given in our culture for people to be together and share life as a family.

2. Charitable Giving | Non-for-profits do their best fundraising during the Christmas season because many people have a sense to give to others.

3. Opportunities to Talk About Jesus | "Jesus is the reason for the season" works for me.  Despite the pagan influences, its pretty easy to overlook those things and just talk about Jesus with people while giving them free cookies and hot chocolate around the church!

4. Foreign Missions Benefit: In many countries Christmas is the most liberating day for Christ followers, even Muslim countries give more freedom for Christians to express themselves.  Thus, I love to help missionaries make the most of the season by feeding the poor, giving help to the needy, and spreading the Gospel of Jesus.


My Advice to "Non-Christmas Celebrators"   

1. Don't Judge Those Who Do | Paul is very clear in Colossians 2:16 & Romans 14:5 that we're not to judge another Christian according to "holy days" or "holidays."  As long as the Christian is not worshipping the tree, its fine.

2. Don't Make it an Issue | I believe unity and peace in the church is more important than arguing over Christmas.  As a pastor I've learned in the past how focusing too much on Christmas needlessly hurt people in the church who I forced to take on my personal conviction.  Therefore, I would suggest if someone asks you about Christmas graciously share with them your beliefs and then leave it alone.  If God wants the teaching to go further in their lives He is able to share it with them without you "ramming it down their spiritual throats."  Remember, by you not being able to celebrate, like myself, according to Romans 14 you and I are the "weaker in faith" and not the "stronger."

3. Relax and Have Fun | If I can do it- I know you can too!  I have found joy in Christmas caroling because it allows me to sings hymns on people's door steps and share the love of Christ.  People in the community are more talkative, families get together, good food is everywhere, therefore, "rejoice with those who rejoice!"


My Advice to "Christmas Celebrators"   

1. Don't Judge Those Who Don't | Paul is very clear in Colossians 2:16 & Romans 14:5 that we're not to judge another Christian according to "holy days" or "holidays."  As long as the non-celebrator isn't trying to burn your Christmas tree on the altar, their fine.

2. Don't Make it an Issue | I believe unity and peace in the church is more important than arguing over Christmas.  As a pastor I've learned in the past how focusing too much on anything other than Jesus and the Bible can be a waste of time.  Simply, share why you celebrate and leave it alone.  No need to try to force your beliefs on those who don't.  Think of it this way, you save money not having to buy us gifts!  Also, according to Romans 14 you are the "stronger in faith" and thus shouldn't grieve the Christian who cannot celebrate because they are "weaker in faith."

3. Don't Over Spend | Enjoy the season, do all unto God, but just don't go into debt.  Take the pressure off of yourself and do whatever you feel is best for you and your family.  If your kids have food, clothes, and a place to stay consider giving them just one Christmas card and write in it, "Merry Christmas!  Your gift for the next year is clothes, food, and shelter!"


Most Common Questions I Get For Not Personally Celebrating Christmas   

1. What About Your Kids? My kids have an ipad, iphone, clothes and toys coming out of every closet, and parents who love to surprise them year round with gifts- not mention two sets of grandparents who make almost every visit a national holiday!  I think they'll be fine, see Matthew 6:33 for my parenting priorities.

2. Do You Celebrate Birthdays?  If Yes, Why, Aren't They Pagan in Origin Too? Yes to both.  We celebrate birthdays and yes they are pagan in origins, meaning the celebration is not found in the Bible.  However, because it doesn't involve religion and its tailored to each person differently we as a family can control greed, expel wrong thinking, and have a good time.

3. How Long Do You Think You Will Continue to Not Celebrate? Short answer, "Until my conscience is no longer grieved."  Long answer, according to Romans 14 I see myself as the "weaker brother" and thus don't have a clear conscience to separate the "good" from the "bad."  Meaning, I cannot in good conscience see past the vast negatives and enjoy the positives. Thus, I to be at peace I avoid it altogether.  On the other hand, one day if I can be at peace in my conscience as other Christians are who celebrate Christmas without greed and the like- I will do so.  Until then I will refrain.  

4. How Does Your Wife and Kids Feel About Not Having Christmas? My wife and I discussed this before we got married and she agreed to my standard for our kids.  At the same time, I felt comfortable enough to give her freedom without judgment to participate with others if she so desired, but after many years she has seen the peace of avoiding it altogether as well.  My children are all under 4 years old, thus, I haven't had to discuss it yet, but I'm sure it wont be much different than our other family guidelines like, "going to church every Sunday," "not watching dirty movies," etc.

The History of Thanksgiving in the United States

In the United States, the modern Thanksgiving holiday tradition is commonly, but not universally, traced to a poorly documented 1621 celebration at Plymouth in present-day Massachusetts. The 1621 Plymouth feast and thanksgiving was prompted by a good harvest.

In later years, religious thanksgiving services were declared by civil leaders such as Governor Bradford who planned a thanksgiving celebration and fast in 1623. The practice of holding an annual harvest festival like this did not become a regular affair in New England until the late 1660s.

Pilgrims and Puritans who began emigrating from England in the 1620s and 1630s carried the tradition of Days of Fasting and Days of Thanksgiving with them to New England. Several days of Thanksgiving were held in early New England history that have been identified as the "First Thanksgiving", including Pilgrim holidays in Plymouth in 1621 and 1623, and a Puritan holiday in Boston in 1631.

Thanksgiving proclamations were made mostly by church leaders in New England up until 1682, and then by both state and church leaders until after the American Revolution. During the revolutionary period, political influences affected the issuance of Thanksgiving proclamations. Various proclamations were made by royal governors, John Hancock, General George Washington, and the Continental Congress, each giving thanks to God for events favorable to their causes.

As President of the United States, George Washington proclaimed the first nation-wide thanksgiving celebration in America marking November 26, 1789, "as a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favours of Almighty God".

What Christians Can Learn from the History of Thanksgiving

1. GIVE THANKS TO GOD | Take time out to thank God for all He has done in your life, Psalm 107.

2. REPENT OF SIN | Repent of any sins you have committed against God, for rebellion against God is the ultimate from of ingratitude, 2 Chronicles 7:14. 

3. INSTRUCT OTHERS | Teach your fellow US citizens, by both deed and example, like George Washington did to "perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually," 2 Timothy 4:1-2.

4. GIVE TO COMMUNITY | Show your THANKS by GIVING to others, do community outreach, James 1:27.

5. EAT & BE MERRY | Enjoy a great meal with friends and family, 1 Corinthians 10:31!

Faith and Works


Text: James 2:14-26

Introduction 

1. The Foundation of Salvation | Mankind is saved by faith alone in Jesus Christ.  Faith in Jesus + Nothing = Salvation, Romans 5:1-2.

2. The Proper Role of Good Works | Those who are truly saved will keep God's commands and have a life of good works.  Faith in Jesus + Obedience = Good Works, Ephesians 2:8-10.

3. Some Common Errors:  

(a) Works Salvation:  Salvation is half faith and half good works, Faith in Christ + Good Works = Salvation.

(b) Sinning Saints: Good works are not necessary in the Christian life, Faith in Christ - Good Works = Salvation, Hebrews 10:26.

4. The Necessity of Good Works | Good works are not necessary to be saved, but are necessary to display one's salvation and prove one's faith genuine.

5. Key Statement | Faith without works is dead, James 2:17.


Breakdown of the Passage

v. 14, James challenges the false belief that Christians can live a Christian life without following Christ commands, John 14:15 & 1 John 2:4-6.

vs. 15-16, James gives the example of trying to help a brother or sister in need and only giving them "well wishes" is a shallow confession without action and is worthless.

v. 17, The most important statement in the text is given, "faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action is dead;" thus proving that faith must have action to be considered valid and genuine.

v. 18, Faith and deeds are placed against each other in the mind of the skeptic who believes faith without deeds is still valid.  Thus, James points out to the skeptic the only way to validate faith is by action and deeds.  Example:  How would one validate the claim made by someone, "I am a professional basketball player?"  By the deeds of the person in a basketball game.

v. 19, James makes the point clear by stating that demons believe in God but are not saved.  Thus, shallow affirmation does not justify someone, but obedience in the confession is needed.  Example:  To profess, "I'm in the Army," can only be really true if the one who confesses it obeys the rules of the Army.

v. 20, James again rebukes the shallow confessor as being "foolish," because they don't obey God's commands and demonstrate their faith.

vs. 21-23, James then gives the example of Abraham having faith and how he acted in obedience by being willing to sacrifice his son.  Thus, Abraham's faith was validated by his obedience to God's commands.

v. 24, James declares that a person, "is justified by what he does and not by faith alone."  This statement is not meant to contradict Paul in Romans 5, but rather clarify that true faith has validating action in obeying God's commands.

v. 25, James gives another example of Rehab, showing that her faith was demonstrated by acting in obedience to God by hiding the spies for their safety.

v. 26, The section ends with the conclusion, "faith without deeds is dead."  Therefore, the statement made in verse 17 is proven true by the two examples and is left for the reader to accept as God's Word.

Therefore, the following is true from James, 
1. The Foundation of Salvation: Mankind is saved by faith alone in Jesus Christ.  Faith in Jesus + Nothing = Salvation.  
2. The Proper Role of Good Works: Those who are truly saved will keep God's commands and have a life of good works.  Faith in Jesus + Obedience = Good Works.  

Application

1. Have faith in Jesus for salvation, Romans 5:1-2.

2. Have faith in Jesus to obey His commands (i.e., "good works"), Ephesians 2:8-10.

Can Women Be in the Ministry? Pastors? Elders? Deacons?


Simple answer, Yes to all.  I have debated this issue with Matt Slick from www.carm.org and still stand by my deductive reasoning.

Please note the basic premises and conclusion:

1. Women have the same salvation as men according to Galatians 3:28.
2. Women have the same Holy Spirit baptism as men according to Acts 2:18.
3. Women have the same spiritual gifts as men according to 1 Corinthians 12:28.
4. Therefore, women must have the same offices as men according to Romans 16:1,7.

Please note the premises, explanations, and conclusion:

1. Women have the same salvation as men according to Galatians 3:28. 

(a) The verse states, "There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus." 

(b) Thus, it is clear that women have the same salvation as men- there is no argument here from the opposing view.

2. Women have the same Holy Spirit baptism as men according to Acts 2:18. 

(a) The verse states, "Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy."

(b) Thus, it is clear that women have the same Spirit baptism and the same gift to "prophesy."  There is no opposing view to this premise. 
 
3. Women have the same spiritual gifts as men according to 1 Corinthians 12:28. 

(a) The verse states, "And in the church God has appointed first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then workers of miracles, also those having gifts of healing, those able to help others, those with gifts of administration, and those speaking in different kinds of tongues."

(b) It is clear that the common gift for women in the church (secretaries/administrators) is given without gender restriction along with "apostles," "prophets," and "teachers."

(c) Thus, with both Acts 2:18b (they shall prophesy) and 1 Cor. 12:28, it is clear there is no gender distinction in spiritual gifts.  Matt Slick offered no argument here, not sure how other opposing views regard this premise.  
 
4. Therefore, women must have the same offices as men according to Romans 16:1,7.                                
(a) The verse states, v. 1 "I commend to you our sister Phoebe, a servant of the church in Cenchrea..." & v. 7, "Greet Andronicus and Junias, my relatives who have been in prison with me. They are outstanding among the apostles, and they were in Christ before I was."

(b) This is the debated issue.  However, if the above premises are correct, which in my debate with Matt Slick they were agreed upon, then the conclusion is true regardless of how one feels about it.

(c) The main issues brought by the opposing side come from the gender restrictions found elsewhere in the Bible, mainly 1 Timothy 2:11-12 & 1 Corinthians 14:34-35.

(d) However, in these restrictions the opposing side is not consistent, for other issues are brought up as well that are not taken "literal" in most opposing side churches, (i) no braided hair- 1 Tim. 2:9, (ii) not to allow women to talk at all in church- 1 Tim. 2:11, and (iii) women are saved specifically by the good work of childbearing, 1 Tim. 2:15.

(e) Therefore, both sides have to draw practical applications and conclusions within the biblical culture and other passages to justify and comply with the very awkward commands of Paul to Timothy and the Corinthians to the modern woman.  We, who believe in the equality of women in the ministry, simply state that the above restrictions are stated within culture to a specific people and time.  Plus, if it can be shown that women in other places at different times did talk and lead men, then the conclusion is once again validated.    

(d) In conclusion, Douglas Moo in his commentary on Romans conceded that Phoebe according to the Greek and the context is most assuredly a deacon (Moo, "Encountering Romans," p. 209).  And, Eldon Epp in his book, "Junia the First Women Apostle," sites that both he and the renowned scholar Richard Bauckham prove vigorously that Junia was an apostle and Daniel Wallace and other dissenters have "serious defects" in their methodology to prove otherwise (Epp, "Junia the First Women Apostle," Kindle 953).

The Fire of God!



Text: Matthew 3:11-12

1. The Fire of God Has Two Different Purposes

(i) To baptize and empower the disciple, Matt. 3:11.

(ii) To judge the world, Matt. 3:12.


2. Old Testament Examples

(i) God spoke to Moses through the fire, i.e., "the burning bush," Ex. 3:2.

(ii) God led the people of Israel through the desert by a "pillar of fire," Ex. 13:22.

(iii) God came down onto Mt. Sinai (Ex. 19:18) and spoke to the people through the fire, Deut. 4:12.

(iv) Daily offerings and sacrifices were made to God by the priests with fire, Lev. 7:5.

(v) God answered by fire in Elijah's time to show the people He was the true God, 1 Kings 18:25.

(vi) God's presence came in fire at the dedication of the temple in Solomon's time, 2 Chron. 7:1.

(vii) God declared to Jeremiah that His Words are like "fire" compared to the words of "dross" from the false prophets, Jer. 23:29.

(viii) Daniel had a vision of God's throne and saw fire all around Him with a river of fire flowing from Him, Dan. 7:9-10.


3. New Testament Examples

(i) Jesus said everyone would be "salted with fire," Mark 9:49.

(ii) Jesus said He didn't come to bring peace, but rather He came to bring "fire on the earth," Luke 12:49-52.

(iii) The fire of God is seen on the disciples heads when the Holy Spirit is poured out on Pentecost, Acts 2:3.

(iv) Jesus is described as having eyes of fire and having seven lamp stands and seven stars in His right hand, Rev. 1:20.

(v) John sees a vision of heaven like Daniel and there is a sea of glass and fire coming from the Throne of God, Rev. 15:2.


4. Application for Today

(i) God is a consuming fire (Heb. 12:29 from Deut. 4:24), thus, you are going to be consumed by God's fire no matter what, Mark 9:49.

(ii) You will either be burned by God's fire in punishment and torment (Rev. 20:14-15) or set on fire by His Holy Spirit with passion and holiness, Matt. 3:11.

(iii)  Therefore, ask God to baptize you with His Holy Spirit fire today and be filled with power to live for God 100%, Acts 1:8; 2:1-3.

"Moving Forward" in Obama's America: How to Make America Great


America Got What They Asked For

I am very proud of my Christian and Conservative friends and how they responded to the disappointing outcome of this year’s elections. What I perceived from them was not a spirit of bitterness or blame-shifting. Rather, much of what I heard and read displayed a sense of genuine hope, honesty and determination. Obviously, we would have liked a different outcome with a different President. But if we’re truthful with ourselves and our beliefs, that’s not what we really need.

While I believe Mitt Romney could have led our country well in many respects, I am nevertheless realistic at our prospects. It’s impossible to know now, but I reckon that having Romney in office would do precious little to stave off the rising tide of extreme social liberalism. Why? Because a democracy is by the people and for the people, and the people of the United States, by and large, are set on their course. 

John Adams is often quoted as saying, “Our constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other." Yet despite claims to the contrary, 21st century Americans are an immoral and irreligious people.  In the words of Jesus, we are an “adulterous and sinful generation” (Mark 8:38).

Though conservatives have scoffed at Obama’s assertion that Washington can’t change from the inside—it’s actually true! And having strong, moral conservatives in office can do nothing to perpetuate a moral society on a people who don’t want a moral society.  There are enough Americans who will buck up against such leadership until that leadership capitulates or until they can elect new leaders that will promote their views.  

The late Charles Colson wrote in 1989’s Against The Night, “We must remember that in a democracy, people get the government they deserve.” He went on to say, “American politics simply mirrors the loss of character in the American people. If the citizens are not willing to put the civic good above their own, they can’t expect their leaders to do it for them.”  In the quote’s context, Colson addressed a mentality among Americans that was “either totally illogical or completely selfish.”

The polls of that day showed that a wide majority of Americans favored increased spending on government programs, and that roughly the same number opposed higher taxes. Bearing witness to this fact over 20 years later, Mike Huckabee wrote on his Facebook upon the announcement of Obama’s decisive victory, “Tonight's results only remind me that our country has slipped into a deeper state of dependence on government than I wanted to believe. Where the Goliath of government has grown so too has our dependency.”

One could argue that we voted for the candidate who promised us the most “stuff”—free love, free welfare, free birth control, and the like. But I think it’s deeper than that. The fact of the matter is, Americans believe in Obama. They desire his vision. They share in his values. And still others who don’t agree with his values are willing to acquiesce in the name of affordable healthcare. 

November 6th was certainly a pivotal election day in that it affirmed and cemented a moral / social path America had been travelling for decades. With Obama in the drivers’ seat, we will mash on the gas moving forward, pardon the pun.

With Barack Obama reelected, expect to see a veritable onslaught against Judeo-Christian values. Policy speaks louder than promises, and Obama has made it very clear where he stands in the culture wars. Unprecedented advances will be made for gay activism, Planned Parenthood, and other decidedly radical special interest groups. Conversely, people of faith in the realms of church, state, business and education will be compelled to violate their creeds and consciences through various mandates and court rulings. I anticipate a shocking suppression of first amendment rights under an uninhibited, second term Obama administration. This is the world we live in, like it or not. It is post-Christian—and we have voted accordingly.


Moving Forward

So what then is there for us who strongly disagree with Obama’s vision, especially those of us who claim to be Christ’s disciples?

Whether or not we have a President who upholds our values, it should not affect our moral and sacred obligation to be “salt and light” in the world. I am partially glad that “our guy” did not gain the White House. It may have served to lull us into a false security, as it did in the Reagan era. As Christians, our hope was never in “our guy” to begin with.

No matter who leads this nation, this much remains true: life has to go on. Many of us are already heading back to our jobs, taking care of our families, and serving in our churches. Things may be harder in some ways, but we will make it somehow like we always have. Equally I am reminded, as I prepare to lead an outreach at an abortion mill, that, this, too, will go on. The outcome of the election could not change the fact that women have, not only the legal right, but the propensity, to visit these places and terminate their pregnancies. There is still a world of hurt behind these “procedures”—a culture of fatherlessness, promiscuity, and selfishness. There is still a generation indoctrinated by years of cunning “pro-choice” rhetoric, repeated over and over again. Romney doesn’t have an answer for that.

Any woe of our society you can think of doesn’t have a political solution. Our Lord set the standard. He didn’t run for office. He didn’t picket or petition or hold rallies. He rolled up his sleeves and “went about doing good and healing all those who were oppressed by the devil” (Acts 10:38). You could say Jesus was a grassroots kind of guy. Jesus was a difference maker wherever he went, and he beckons us to do the same! Real answers for this hurting nation require real work, real sacrifice and real perseverance—on the part of the people, not the politicians.

Here is a challenge to my Christian and Conservative friends. It’s easy to cast a vote every few years; it’s harder to volunteer on a regular basis for years at a time. It’s easy to post online and argue about the issues; it’s harder to look someone you differ with in the face and speak the truth in love. It’s easy to berate abortion; it’s harder to plan adoption. It’s easy to point the finger at same-sex marriages; it’s harder to be faithful in our own marriages. It’s easy to condemn welfare as government handouts; it’s harder to invest in someone’s life to give them a hand up. It’s easy to trust in a charismatic leader to solve all our problems; it’s harder to hit our knees and surrender to Almighty God in the midst of our problems.

To the reader, I adjure you: go to God in prayer and ask Him, “What can I do to make this nation great?” and then get up and do it.

Top Five Reasons Why Christians Don't Street Witness


The Workers are... FEW!

I want to introduce this lesson by giving the reader a "wake up call" with some hard-hitting facts concerning the state of churches in the US:
  • 95% of all Christians have never won someone to the Lord! 
  • 80% of Christians never even share their faith! 
  • Only 2% of all Christians are active in evangelism ministries at their church! 
  • 63% of the leadership, including deacons and elders, have not led one stranger to Jesus in the last two years through the method of “Go Ye” into all the world!
  • 49% of the leadership ministries spend zero time in an average week ministering outside of the church!
  • 89% of the leadership ministries have zero time reserved on their list of weekly priorities for going out to evangelize!
  • 99% of church leadership believes that every Christian, including themselves, have been commanded to preach the gospel to a lost world (notice the hypocrisy, "they know and teach, but don't do and obey!").
  • 97% of all Christians believe that if the church leadership had a greater conviction and involvement in evangelism, that it would be an example for them to follow.
  • 96% of church leadership believe their churches would grow faster if every Christian would be more involved in evangelism.*

Definitions

1. Witness: To preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ to an unsaved person, Acts 1:8.

2. Street Witness:  To preach the Gospel on the streets, i.e., "in public with strangers," Luke 10:1-3.

Difference Between "Message and Method"

Some "well intentioned Christians" have said that though all believers are to preach the "message" of Jesus, not everyone is commanded to follow His "method of public witness."  Meaning, Jesus preached on the streets more than any one place- more than the temple, in homes, or in the market place... the streets and outdoor countrysides were His pulpit and the public was his congregation.  However, many today in the modern church believe they can avoid following Jesus' example and simply choose whatever way is most comfortable for them.

Thus, no one would disagree to say that all believers are to witness and have freedom to choose methods that work best for them- on the job, at lunch meetings, etc... however, the overwhelming example of Jesus' method on the streets must be followed and obeyed as the first priority.

Notice this verse where Jesus describes where the Gospel will go... to the "roads and country lane," i.e., "the main streets and alleys/back roads!"
Luke 14:23,
“Then the master told his servant, ‘Go out to the roads and country lanes and make them come in, so that my house will be full."

The Clear Example and Command of Jesus to Street Witness

1. Command:  It was clear from the beginning with Jesus concerning His relationship with His disciples- they would be fishers of men (Matt. 4:19) and they were going to "go out and preach."  Some have tried to argue and say the "going out to preach" can simply mean on their job or in churches, however, by the clear example of Jesus with His disciples it is obvious He meant in public places and on the streets with strangers.
Mark 3:13-15, Call to be Witnesses 
13 Jesus went up on a mountainside and called to him those he wanted, and they came to him. 14 He appointed twelve–designating them apostles –that they might be with him and that he might send them out to preach 15 and to have authority to drive out demons. 
2. Example: Jesus sent out His disciples in groups of two ahead of Him before He went to new cities.
Luke 10:1-3, Call to the Streets
1 After this the Lord appointed seventy- two others and sent them two by two ahead of him to every town and place where he was about to go. 2 He told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field. 

Top Five Excuses Not to Street Witness

As an overseeing elder in the church for over 14yrs I will now share the top five excuses I have heard to not street witness over the years by fellow Christians.  Plus, I will give a simple Biblical response to each one.

5. I feel if I street witness I will be like the Jehovah Witnesses.

I have actually heard this!  Just because a "cult" has been more obedient to a section of the Bible, doesn't mean we should neglect it!  Are we going to stop praying because Romans Catholics pray?!

Biblical Answer: Mark 4:18-22, Jesus shows that though it was popular for Jewish teachers and philosophers to travel and publicly call people to follow their teachings, this didn't stop Him from doing the same thing, but for His message.

4. I witness on my job and other places I feel more comfortable in- street witnessing is just one way that I don't like to do.  Jesus would be okay with my method of witnessing as long as I share my faith wherever I go. 

Of course, Jesus wants you to witness on your job, with your family, and everywhere you go.  However, that doesn't exempt you from doing what Jesus commanded you to do.  Plus, those who witness on the streets are the best kind of disciples to witness on their jobs because they are trained and experienced dealing with all kinds of people.

Biblical Answer:  Luke 4:43-44, Notice Jesus preached in the villages publicly AND in the synagogues   Meaning, Jesus loved to preached everywhere, but He never neglected the streets.

3. My other church and pastor don't street witness and they are good examples for me to follow.

The Word of God is not found true whether or not we as leaders believe it or obey it.  The Word of God is true because God said it.  There are a ton of godly preachers that do street witness, thus, the issue isn't up for vote, but rather, "What did Jesus say?!"  We, as street witnessing leaders, are more than willing to meet with your pastors and leaders to discuss/debate what the Bible says, but you my dear friend you will be held responsible to what the Word of God teaches, no matter what anyone says.  Therefore, "Do what Jesus did, period."

Biblical Answer: Luke 10:1-3, Imagine you were with Jesus that day when He sent out the 72 in the streets, would you obey and follow His command or disobey? Would you say something like this, "Jesus, my other rabbi says I don't have to do this- I can just preach on my job."  God forbid- its really that simple- choose to obey Jesus over man.

2. I'm too scared- I want to wait till I'm ready.

Imagine being with Peter on the day of Pentecost in Jerusalem, the whole city is filled with the same people who demanded Jesus to be crucified.  Then all of a sudden, after a powerful upper room experience Peter boldly calls out to everyone, "Let's head out to the streets and publicly preach Jesus to to the crowds as loud as we can!"  Would you dare say back to him,  "Uh, I'm not ready yet, I'll stay here and keep praying, maybe next time!"

How did those first disciples have the power to overcome their fear and publicly preach Jesus to thousands?  By the power of the Holy Spirit!  The same is true today- God's power will overcome your fear to street witness.  Therefore, be filled with the explosive-fear-annihilating power of the Holy Spirit and be Jesus' public witness like the first disciples!

Biblical Answer:  Acts 1:8 & 2:14, It is obvious by this passage and thus should be a "finisher" to all excuses concerning public witness, that the power of the Holy Spirit empowers and compels all believers to be public witnesses for Christ!

1. I'm too young or I'm too old.

Can you please show me an age requirement or retirement age for keeping God's commands? Until then, I suggest you obey all of God's commands no matter your age.  Also, consider the story of Timothy.  When Timothy was young in the time of Paul God command him, "do the work of an evangelist," 2 Timothy 4:5.  However, did you know how Timothy died as an old man long after the time of Paul?

Please read this story of Timothy passed down by the church fathers concerning his death while "doing the work of an evangelist,"
"... Timothy (at the age of 80) tried to halt a pagan procession of idols, ceremonies, and songs. In response to his preaching of the gospel, the angry pagans beat him, dragged him through the streets, and stoned him to death."
Wow, Timothy being both young and old kept Jesus' commands to be a public witness on the streets!  Not only did he preach in public places like Mardi Gras, but he gave his very life as a martyr.  May we all be like Timothy until all our streets are changed by the Gospel!

Biblical Answer: 2 Timothy 4:5, The life of Timothy both while being young and old sets the perfect example for everyone to follow.

Go!

Now its your turn to stop making excuses and be obedient to Christ's commands to street witness!  Find a corner and share your faith publicly.  Pick a festival and go to it like Timothy and share your faith.  Grab some tracks and head out an hour before your life group/church service and tell the world about Jesus- bid them to come!

If your church doesn't do it- humbly ask your pastor if you can start a street ministry or find a church that does and work with them.  Don't get discouraged if you are mocked or mistreated by sinners, for this is how they treated Jesus and the disciples before you.  Also, don't be in bondage to a difficult schedule, make times that work best for you and your family- but don't just sit there, do something.

In conclusion, the Bible doesn't state how much you should street witness- once a week/month/year, etc... however, it does teach us to do it.  Therefore, start today and let God led you!  Make it a priority and find ways and times that work best for you.
