The Hypostatic Union

OPENING TEXT

Philippians 2:1-11,
1 If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, 2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose. 3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. 4 Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. 5 Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus:
6 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, 7 but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death – even death on a cross! 9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

INTRODUCTION

1. God the Son has always existed with the Father, equal in all divine attributes (all knowing, all powerful, and ever present), John 1:1,14,18.

2. The Hypostatic Union refers to the joining of the Son of God's divinity with a human nature at the incarnation, Philippians 2:6-7.

3. "Hypostasis" is the Greek word for "substance or nature," like found in Hebrews 1:3.  Thus, the "nature/substance/hypostasis" of Christ is two natures in one, fully human and fully divine.  Click here for more Scriptural evidence.

4. The incarnation took place at the conception of the virgin Mary when she became pregnant by the Holy Spirit, Matthew 1:18.

5. Clarifications
(i) God the Son was never created- He has always existed. He simply took on flesh to dwell with mankind.
(ii) Mary wasn't sinless (the immaculate conception), she was a sinner like all of mankind (Romans 3:23).  Therefore, Mary was chosen to bring forth God the Son by the power of the Holy Spirit, not by her own nature or righteousness.
(iii) The Father didn't become Jesus, the Father and Son are separate persons, yet one divine being.  The Father sent the person of the Son to become man, Daniel 7:13.
(iv) Jesus wasn't half God and half man, He was and is fully (100%) God and fully (100%) man in one person.

(v) Jesus, always being God in the flesh, experienced weakness (John 4:6), lack of knowledge (Mark 13:32), and suffered physical death (John 19:33) because of the "kenosis," not because He "stopped being God."  Therefore, God the Son willing and purposefully "self-emptied and limited" His divine privileges to be fully man and redeem lost mankind, Philippians 2:7-8.

THE HYPOSTATIC UNION

vs. 6-7, Jesus, already equal to God, didn't need to "grasp" His privileges of being God, He was willing to become a man.  Thus, Jesus made Himself nothing by setting aside His divine privileges and becoming limited as a man.

v. 8, He humbled Himself, even unto to death on the cross.  Meaning, He allowed His own creation to kill His earthly body.

vs. 9-11, Therefore, God the Father exalted Jesus and His name above everyone and every name. Every knee will bow and confess, "Jesus Christ is Lord (Yahweh, the God of all Creation)," Isaiah 45:21,23; to the glory (honor and reputation) of God the Father.

THE ATTITUDE OF CHRIST

vs. 1-2, Paul declares that if people are really "united with Christ," they should be, (i) like-minded in the church, (ii) have the same love, (iii) be in one spirit, and (iv) purpose.

vs. 3-4, No one should act out of "selfish ambition" or "vain conceit."  But rather in humility (i) consider others better than themselves and (ii) look to other's needs and interests.

v. 5, Therefore, everyone should have the same "attitude" and "mindset/thoughts" that Jesus had when He humbled Himself to live, suffer, and die as a man.

APPLICATION

1. Avoid All Bad Attitudes
(i) Gender Attitudes
(ii) Age Attitudes
(iii) Cultural Attitudes
(iv) Sinful Attitudes
2. Repent of All "Selfish Ambition" and "Vain Conceit," i.e., "Pride."

3. Have the Humble Attitude of Christ and Prefer Other's Needs and Interests Above Your Own

_____________________________________________

The Bottom Line: Look to Jesus' attitude in the Hypostatic Union and Kenosis as your example for acting with a humble attitude in life.

Revival > Four Reasons Why America Needs Jesus

This timely message was delivered on the first Sunday after the horrific school shooting in Connecticut where 28 people in total died- 20 children, 6 school workers, the shooter's Mom, and the shooter from suicide.

OPENING TEXT

Hosea 6:1-3,
1 Come, let us return to the Lord. He has torn us to pieces but he will heal us; he has injured us but he will bind up our wounds.
2 After two days he will revive us; on the third day he will restore us, that we may live in his presence.
3 Let us acknowledge the Lord; let us press on to acknowledge him. As surely as the sun rises, he will appear; he will come to us like the winter rains, like the spring rains that water the earth.

INTRODUCTION

+Israel Sinned Against God |
Hosea lived in a time when Israel, God's chosen people, were living in sin and idolatry.

+God Rejected His People | Thus, God declared through Hosea's prophecies that He was no longer Israel's God nor was He going to forgive them- but rather punish them if they didn't repent. Hosea 1:6,9 states,
6 Gomer conceived again and gave birth to a daughter. Then the Lord said to Hosea, "Call her Lo-Ruhamah, for I will no longer show love to the house of Israel, that I should at all forgive them."
9 Then the Lord said, "Call him Lo-Ammi, for you are not my people, and I am not your God."
The reason why Israel saw violence and tragedy was because God stopped protecting them.  The same is true in America today, there has always been violent people with guns for the last hundred years, but God protected us from their harmful ways.  Now in these last days he has allowed the evil of men's hearts to prosper by removing His hand of protection from our land.  Like a child refusing to stay close to the Mother who holds the umbrella and thus gets wet from the rain, so it is when a nation will not stay close to God- it will suffer harm.

+God Sent Assyria to Punish Israel | However, the people of Israel would not repent, thus, God rejected them as a nation for a season of destruction under the Assyrians in 722 BC.  Hosea 2:13,
13 I will punish her for the days she burned incense to the Baals; she decked herself with rings and jewelry, and went after her lovers, but me she forgot, declares the Lord.
+God Promised Israel Revival When They Repented | Therefore, in Chapter 6 God promised Hosea that when the people did finally repent He will forgive and revive them.

REVIVAL > FOUR REASONS WHY AMERICA NEEDS JESUS

Definition of Revival | The biblical definition from the Old Testament is when the people of God come alive to God and live out daily the commands of God.

Thus, revival is not a city wide prayer meeting, an outreach, a special set of services, all night worship, an on-fire sermon, a gimmick of any kind, or even souls getting saved- all these things come after the Church has experienced revival.

John Adam's Quote | "We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion... Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other." Second US President, 1798.

______________________________

1-SIN. America is more wicked than Noah's generation (over 50 million abortions) and more perverted than Sodom and Gomorrah (tens of millions of people hooked on pornography, having sex outside of marriage, and proudly living in sex relationships).
Genesis 6:1-3, Noah's Time
5 Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. 6 The Lord was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart. 7 The Lord said, I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, from man to animals to creeping things and to birds of the sky; for I am sorry that I have made them.
Jude 1:7, Sodom and Gomorrah,
7 In a similar way, Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion. They serve as an example of those who suffer the punishment of eternal fire.

2-LIES. Many Americans have exchanged the truth of God for a lie, i.e., "false religions," "evolutionary morality," and "secular humanism."
Romans 1:18-32,
18 The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, 19 since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. 20 For since the creation of the world Gods invisible qualities–his eternal power and divine nature–have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.
21 For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles.
24 Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. 25 They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator–who is forever praised. Amen.
26 Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. 27 In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.
28 Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done. 29 They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, 30 slanderers, God- haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; 31 they are senseless, faithless, heartless, ruthless. 32 Although they know Gods righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.

3-NO RESTRAINT. Many of America's top scientists, politiciansprofessors, entertainers, and business owners have thrown off the restraints of God's law.  Meaning, they have knowing and purposefully rejected the laws of God to do what seems right in their own eyes.
Psalm 2:1-3,
1 Why do the nations conspire and the peoples plot in vain? 2 The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers gather together against the Lord and against his Anointed One. 3 Let us break their chains, they say, and throw off their fetters.

4-JUDGEMENT. Jesus is coming back to judge the world in righteousness.  However, many people, like in the times of Noah and Sodom, people will be distracted by their day-to-day activities.
Luke 17:26-30,
26 Just as it was in the days of Noah, so also will it be in the days of the Son of Man. 27 People were eating, drinking, marrying and being given in marriage up to the day Noah entered the ark. Then the flood came and destroyed them all.
28 It was the same in the days of Lot. People were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building. 29 But the day Lot left Sodom, fire and sulfur rained down from heaven and destroyed them all.
30 It will be just like this on the day the Son of Man is revealed.

CONCLUSION

(1) Get saved, and (2) Stay revived to warn others- When Peter and the early church was revived they could awaken the world around them!
Acts 2:36-41,
36 Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ. 37 When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, Brothers, what shall we do?
38 Peter replied, Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off –for all whom the Lord our God will call.
40 With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, Save yourselves from this corrupt generation. 41 Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.

Thoughts About the Connecticut School Shooting

Here are My Two Thoughts Concerning this Massive Tragedy

1-CHRISTIANS | As my wife is weeping for the slain, our prayers need to rise for these families and community!  Jesus is near to the broken hearted, He bore their sorrows on the cross, and comforts all who call out to Him, Psalm 145:18-19.  Click here for comforting verses for times of grief.

2-NON CHRISTIANS | This nation is full of vile wickedness, gross perversion, and horrific violence because it has rejected God, period. Repent of your sins before a holy God and "save yourself from this wicked generation!"

Four Things to Consider from the Scriptures at This Time

1-TODAY'S MODERN WORLD IS WICKED | If God does not judge today's world, He will have to repent to Noah's generation for they were not even as voilent as modern man.  National genocides in Africa/Germany/Russia (tens of millions murdered), abortions (over 50 million just in the US), and communist & Islamic fascism (China, North Korea, Sudan, Iran, Egypt, etc).
Genesis 6:5-6,
5 The Lord saw how great mans wickedness on the earth had become, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time.
6 The Lord was grieved that he had made man on the earth, and his heart was filled with pain.
7 So the Lord said, I will wipe mankind, whom I have created, from the face of the earth –men and animals, and creatures that move along the ground, and birds of the air–for I am grieved that I have made them.

2-JESUS WILL JUDGE THE WORLD | Jesus said just how it was in Noah's day (voilent & wicked) and how it was in Sodom's day (proud & perverted)- it will be in the last days!  Therefore, everyone must prepare for Jesus' second coming!

3-THE LAST DAYS WILL BE WORSE THAN ANY PREVIOUS TIME | Paul said in the last days we would see the worst moral behavior ever witnessed upon our planet.  Americans have always had guns, schools, and angry people- but the reason why we've never seen anything like what we're seeing now is because of a dramatic increase in man's wickedness.
1 Timothy 3:1-4,
1 But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. 2 People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self- control, brutal, not lovers of the good, 4 treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God– 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with them.

4-THE GOSPEL IS OUR ONLY HOPE | The Gospel of Jesus Christ is for everyone today, repent of your sins and be saved!  Everyone must admit they are a sinner, believe in Jesus as the Savior who rose from the dead, and confess their sins and Jesus as the Lord of their lives.

Acts 2:36-40,
36 Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.

God's Got Your Back!

SERMON

NOTES

Text: James 1:5-8, God promises to give wisdom to all who ask.  Therefore, let us look at the questions below and ask God's Word for the answers!

Most Asked Questions:

1. What can we do to see national revival?

Preach, pray, and plug away, Acts 2:42-47.  National revival will happen when personal revival happens and the church is shining its light the brightest.

Resource: Great preaching on revival, here.

2. Why does the devil have so much power and seem to be bringing more evil upon the earth than God does good?

The devil only has as much authority as what people give him and Jesus said, "wide is the path of destruction," therefore, many people freely choose sin over God's righteousness, Matthew 7:13.

Resource: Insightful answer by a Christian philosopher, here.

3. How does the Bible define manhood?

Being a biblical man is being the most like God the Father and His Son Jesus, both are seen in the Old and New Testament as the best examples of masculinity.  The most important traits would be, (1) Love for God and people as defined by the Bible, (2) commitment to family, (3) hard working and providing, (4) teaching and leading both in the church and community, and (5) a person of compassion and charitable deeds, 1 Timothy 3:1-13.

Resource: Tons of sermons on Biblical manhood and woman hood, here.

4. How do I raise godly children?

Lead by example and teach them the ways of God, Proverbs 22:6.  Teach them to pray, memorize Scripture, discipline them consistently, discover their passions, connect them to the church, and speak the Word of God over their lives as much as possible.

Resource: Best website out there on how to have a godly family, here.

5. How can a single parent do the job of both parents and raise their children without lacking any good thing?

By depending on God's strength, extended family, and the church.  Find same-sex mentors for the child as early as possible (if you as the parent are not the same gender) and have them meet together weekly or monthly, Titus 2:1-6.

Also, have them safely learn about the positives of the missing parent through trusted relationships.  For example, if you're a single Mom raising a daughter and her dad is not in the picture, have her under your supervision in public, start a trusted relationship with a father and his family in the church.  Consider joint gatherings, like "family fun nights," than your daughter can see the value of a father and learn what to look for in her husband one day.  Ofcouse family members would be best for the job, but if they don't have godly principles, I would value the church family more highly.

Resource: Many encouraging articles on the aspects of single parenting- divorce, custody, parenting advice, etc; here.

6. How do we blend two families together to make a one new happy family?

By the same biblical principles for a marriage between two singles without children.  Both parents should have a good relationship with God and the church, the man should be the leader and final authority, and together the husband and wife must raise their children with the teachings of the Bible, Ephesians 5:22-33.

Resource: Great website and article for blended families, here.

7. How do I increase my faith?

By hearing, reading, and speaking the Word of God, Romans 10:17.

Resource: Great faith based preaching on various topics, here.

8. How can I really forgive those who have deeply hurt me?

Only by God's grace.  You must see them as sinners in need of Savior, just like how you were, and believe that God loves them enough to not let them parish, 2 Peter 3:9.  Also, remember how God forgave you when you didn't deserve it and thus, see that He wants you to do the same thingto them though they don't deserve it, Matthew 18:21-35.

Resource: Great book on overcoming bitterness and unforgiveness, here.

9. Are we really living in the end times, if so what are Christians to do about it?

Yes, don't give in to sin or let fear take away your faith in Jesus.  Live fully for Jesus by obeying all He commanded and tell the world about His Gospel, Matthew 24:12-14.

Resource: Powerful endtime preaching series, here.

10. How can Christians fight in war and kill people, when Jesus said to "turn the other check?"

Its called a "just war," meaning it is better to fight than not fight.  For example, if everyone turned the other check to Hilter there would be no more checks left!  Sometimes fighting and killing people in war is the only way innocent people can be spared, Romans 13:3-5.

Resource: Insightful book on the different views of war from Christian perspectives, here.

11. Where was Jesus before His birth?

In heaven as God the Son, Jesus has always existed, His birth was simply Him taking on flesh, John 1:1-18.

Resource: Article on the "incarnation," here.

12. Why doesn't God heal everyone?

Three options, (1) Its not His will to heal at that time, 2 Timothy 2:14, (2) Lack of faith, Matthew 17:19-20; or (3) A combination of 1 & 2.  Meaning, God can be desiring to heal but we are lacking faith and sometimes, sickness leads to death because all men are destined to die.

Resource: Further study on divine healing, here.

13. How do I keep hope in these tough economic times?

Trust God, don't base your personal value on your valuables, be open to realigning yourself and finding a new job in a different field.  Also, be willing to get retrained and educated (Joseph in the Bible), pray for new open doors to open, (Psalm 1), and don't give up hope, Matthew 6:33.

Resource: Informative website for Christians to learn Biblical financial principles, here.

14. What is the balance between ministry and family, which should comes first?

Family always comes first in the sense of responsibility and care when you are married or have children, 1 Timothy 5:8.  However, in the sense of serving God and following His commands, God's ministry comes first, Luke 14:26.  Therefore, if your spouse is saved and willing to serve God, you must work together to meet each other's needs first.  Then seek to serve God in the ministry with your lives as the examples of disciples.

Resource: Great book on having a blessed life and ministry, here.

15. Why are same sex attractions wrong if they come natural to the person?

Everyone is a born a sinner with all kinds of wrong desires, our sexual desires must be subjected to the Word of God just like jealousy, greed, etc.  Therefore, seek God daily to renew your mind, Romans 12:1-2.

Resource: Powerful website for resources and encouragement, here.

16. What is the Biblical stance on illegal immigration?

I believe we as Christians should not violate the law unless it violates our faith, all other laws should be obeyed.  In the case of immigration, until the laws are changed, illegal immigrants should do all they can to become legal citizens, Romans 13:1.  Also, the difference between America and Israel's care of "strangers," was Israel made it a law to help in such a way.  Thus, the bottom line is people should follow the laws of the country they live in.

Resource: Great article with more depth and different points of view, here.

17. How can I overcome depression?

There are basically two kinds of depression in my point of view, one that is physical and the other emotionally.  Meaning, the physical kind can be seen and diagnosed by doctors and given medicine to help, for example increasing levels of "serotonin."  However, sometimes people are just going through a hard time emotionally and need to make some new friends, find a different job, or spend more time in church, etc.

Therefore, those who suffer from chronic depression should seek a doctor along with prayer for healing and those suffering emotionally should turn their attention to God and praise Him through the storm, Nehemiah 8:9-10.

Resource: Series of articles on depression in the Christian's life, here.

18. How should I respond to unbiblical leadership in the church, especially when they sin and cover it up?

We as Christians should never support sin in the name of love.  Thus, when leaders sin they are to be rebuked before the whole congregation so that others will take warning and fear God- no cover up of any kind.  Unless that takes place, with genuine repentance, Christians are free from any and all ties to the church and its leadership, 1 Timothy 5:19-22.

Resource: Great book on dealing with sinning/controlling/unbiblical leadership, here.

19. What if someone I love is missing, how do I have closer or live in peace?

Jacob was told his son Joseph was dead, yet it turned out he was still alive.  Thus, we can learn from Jacob to continue to live life pleasing God and trust Him no matter what happens in the situation.  God is big enough to make all things will work together for His good either in this life or the one to come, Romans 8:28.

Resource: Powerful book dealing with grief, here.

20. How can I show strangers the love of Christ without appearing overbearing or be classified as poor myself?

I like what John Wesley said, "We are to do all the good we can, to whoever we can, whenever we can, for as long as we can," Galatians 6:10.  Do good in ways people can appreciate it and don't let what people think about you stop you from being a servant- for that's what Jesus did!

Resource: Great website with tons of stories and practical ways to do community outreach, here.

Conclusion:

1-God's got your back, Psalm 145:17-20.

2-Remember no matter what you're facing God's Word has the answer, 2 Timothy 3:16-17.

3-Nothing can separate you from the love of God, Romans 8:35-39.

Biblical Example of God's Righteousness and Love: The day of judgment when Jesus divides the world like sheep and goats.  He will eternal save and reward those who names are written in the book of life and eternally condemn and punish those who rejected him, Matthew 25:31-46 & Revelation 20:11-22:1.

My Personal Example of God's Righteousness and Love: The time God was my friend even when others hurt me.  He never left me and always poured out His love in righteousness, i.e., "He did the right things."
